In The Great Race, Nathan Kumar Scott brings life to Kanchil a popular trickster from Indonesian and Malaysian folklore. Normally, this wily deer makes up for his small stature by using his cunning in order to survive in the rainforest. But this time, Kanchil the deer is tricked by someone even smaller than himself.

The illustrations are in keeping with the traditional, folkloric narrative. Illustrator Jagdish Chitara renders the jungle creatures in the firm hand typical of his ethnic roots, the Waghari people of Gujarat province in India. The colours are somber: black, beige, and reddish-brown. Two pages of photos and text at the back of the book showcase this art form and the illustrator.
